Role of national rural employment guarantee scheme in alleviation of poverty and income generation for families in Ganjam district of Orissa

Abstract

India is a country with more than one billion people out of which 66% live in rural area. It is strange that after seventy years of Independence the economy in the rural sector has not changed prospectively. Rural India is in a malign state. Poverty alleviation is a set of measures both economic and humanitarian intended to lift the people out of poverty. Nearly 49% of entire populations live below the poverty line. Poverty implies a condition in which a person finds him unable to maintain a living standard adequate for his physical and mental efficiency.Economic liberalization, extending property rights protection to the poor is one of the most important poverty reduction strategies. Investing in infrastructure building can also reduce poverty in providing means of skill training etc. Economic growth has indirect and direct potential to alleviate poverty. Self sufficiency in making employment opportunities available is as important as increasing income and access to basic needs. Poverty generally means lack of income.
