Abstract
Despite numerous studies that have been made in understanding and
newlinemanagement of diabetes, its related complications are increasing. Remedies
newlinefrom terrestrial herbs and marine algae were used with success to treat
newlinediabetes. Many traditional plants are used in the treatment of diabetes
newlinethroughout the world and there is an increasing demand for natural products.
newlineTraditional medicinal plants have hypoglycemic effects and potential
newlineeffectiveness against diabetes; it is inferred that these plants have a major
newlinerole to play in the management of diabetes. Many new bioactive molecules
newlineisolated from traditional medicinal plants have hypoglycemic effects
newlinecomparable to the known oral hypoglycemic agents. Among traditional plants,
newlinemarine seaweeds received much attention due to their abundant source of
newlinepolysaccharides. The sulfated polysaccharides of seaweeds have been
newlinereported to possess diverse biological activities of pharmaceutical value.
newlineNumerous studies have been made on the antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiinflammatory,
newlineand immunomodulatory efficiency of crude extracts of
newlineseaweeds. The importance of seaweed products in the pharmaceutical
newlineindustry has become increasingly apparent considering their characteristics
newlinesuch as anticoagulants, enzyme inhibitors, antiviral and antithrombotic
newlineactivities. The pharmaceutical potential of the purified form of seaweed
newlinepolysaccharides, in particular, the fucoidan as an antidiabetic agent needs to
newlinebe explored. Viewing the above facts, the present study on the effect of Sargassum wightii ethanolic extract, and its isolated molecule; fucoidan on diabetes mellitus was undertaken.
