Abstract
Employee welfare in the context of local government involves a range of initiatives designed to enhance the well-being, motivation, and overall quality of life of public sector employees. These programs include competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans, as well as opportunities for work-life balance and professional growth. Effective welfare programs in local government create a supportive work environment that addresses the unique challenges faced by public sector employees, leading to improved job satisfaction, reduced attrition, and increased engagement. Prioritizing employee welfare not only fosters a motivated workforce but also contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of local governance.
newlineThe study aims to assess welfare practices for employees in urban local self-governments, focusing on their impact on well-being and motivation. It also offers recommendations for improving these programs and aligning them with relevant laws and policies. Using a descriptive research approach, the study gathers quantitative data through questionnaires and qualitative insights through interviews. A sample size of 375 workers was calculated for the Pune Municipal Corporation, and 360 workers for the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. This approach provides a comprehensive view of the adequacy and compliance of welfare facilities, highlighting the need for a standardized framework to ensure consistent welfare support for employees in urban local bodies. It was found that, many employees lack awareness of their rights and the welfare facilities available to them, making it crucial for them to understand the specific regulations governing these benefits to ensure fair treatment and access to entitled support. It is recommended to revise the Municipal Corporation Act (MMC Act) to include specific welfare provisions, ensuring minimum standards for employee benefits like healthcare and safety.
