Drug Utilization and Quality Of Life Studies in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

The research on drug utilization and quality of life studies in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus concludes the following: Since the studies have been done in a diabetes specialty clinic, with specialized physicians, dieticians and other paramedical staff, the prescription, dosage schedule and treatment is in accordance with the current Indian guidelines (Maji 2002) and also with The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists Medical Guidelines for the Management of Diabetes Mellitus: (2002). The clinic is well equipped with laboratory for the testing of blood glucose levels, lipid profile, BMI, etc. which enables the physicians to diagnose the patients and to prescribe the drugs in accordance with the blood glucose level of the patients. The guidelines practiced at the specialty diabetic clinic at AIIMS, New Delhi should be adopted by physicians all over the country and should be taken up as national diabetic management program for India. Significant population of T2DM patients, especially man, were affected with early onset of T2DM (30-45 years). Majority of the patients (around 70.0%) had usual onset of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus after the age of 45 year. The prevalence of T2DM was greater in males in comparison to females. Using the definition of obesity BMIgt25 Kg/m , it was found to be prevalent in about half of the patients (52.0% in RS and 48.5% patients in PS), especially in females. The average weight pattern in males and females were between 51 90 kg and 41- 80 kg respectively. Hypertension was found to be the most common associated disease with Type 2 Diabetes (34.0%) and has been increasing in diabetics significantly (13.0%). The other co-morbidities are coronary artery disease and dyslipidemia. As the prevalence of diabetes is increasing in India, intensive diabetes self management programs by imparting properly structured knowledge by pharmacist should be made mandatory in all hospitals, dispensaries and primary health centers to avoid the complications of diabetes as well as burden of the disease.
