The exponentially growing demands from increasing number of users as well as newlineincreasing data requirements per user has shifted the optical fiber communications technology newlinetowards large capacity, longer transmission distance, and higher spectral range. newlineThe emerging high-end technologies such as 6G networks, virtual and augmented reality newlineand smart applications based on Internet of Things (IoT) require high-speed optical newlinecommunication networks with flexibility and reconfigurability. Optical Performance newlineMonitoring (OPM) plays a major role here to provide information about the signal type newlineand quality diagnosis to enable robust operation of the optical networks. OPM is critically newlineemployed in two aspects which are at the transceiver end and at the intermediate newlinenodes. At the transceiver ends, the parameters such as the modulation format (MF), newlinebit rate (BR), center wavelength (CWL) are adaptively adjusted according to the requirement newlineof the user. These adjustments are made based on impairment parameters of newlinethe optical path, including Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio (OSNR), chromatic dispersion newline(CD), and differential group delay (DGD). The goal is to optimize the performance of newlinethe optical communication system by dynamically monitoring its parameters according newlineto the varying conditions of the optical path to achieve optimum performance. Another newlineaspect of OPM is the intermediate nodes monitoring of impairment parameters like newlineOSNR, CD, and DGD. This monitoring is crucial for applying compensation measures, newlinewhich aim to retrieve transmitted data with minimal loss. Simultaneous and continuous newlineOPM is thus an essential requirement in efficient management of intelligent optical newlinenetworks. newlineExisting OPM techniques face significant limitations in simultaneously monitoring newlinemultiple parameters with high accuracy, real-time performance, and low computational newlineoverhead. The challenges in real-time OPM monitoring include simultaneous newlinemonitoring of multiple parameters while achieving higher accuracy and minimum loss.
