Abstract
In recent times rapid development has been going on in the manufacturing and applications of CFRP composites. These composites are widely utilized in various industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics and others due to its functional properties that could be tailored to satisfy mechanical, chemical and structural requirements of industries. Nowadays automotive and aerospace industries are focusing on weight reduction to increase the fuel efficiency, decrease green house gas emission and energy usage to meet the challenges of fossil fuel depletion and environmental problems. In this context the utilization of CFRP composites in various industries and investigating the machinability of the composites become significant for wider applications.
newlinePast research works on CFRP composites involves studying the effect of feed rate, spindle speed, point angle and drill materials on the surface roughness, thrust force and delamination factor encountered the during drilling of CFRP composites. Literatures also reveal that ceramic particles such as alumina can be added to CFRP composites to improve their machinability. However the published works to investigate the effect of particle (Al2O3) content on the drilling of CFRP composites in-terms of thrust force and delamination were found to be very restricted. Hence this study concentrates on finding the effects of Al2O3 particles addition to CFRP composites by conducting drilling experiments on the Al2O3 included CFRP plates.
