The present research work dwells on the socio-spatial, morphological and environmental changes that have taken place in Shimla between 1971 and 2001. The objectives of the study include newline To study the evolution of the town and to identify the changes that has taken place in its socio-spatial personality. newline To study the land use patterns of the town during 1971 and 2001 and the pattern that has emerged as a result of these changes. newline To study the changes in terms of population in Shimla town between 1971 and 2001. newline To study the implications of the structure and growth (i.e. urban sprawl and population pressure) on the environment of the town. newlineThe methodology used included the analysis and mapping of secondary data obtained from agencies such as Census of India and TCPO as well as data collected through primary survey apart from facts gleaned from available historical literature. The state of Himachal Pradesh in 2001 was the least urbanized state in India. Shimla was the only class 1 town, having a concentration of urban functions which made it the premier town of Himachal Pradesh. The town has expanded physically and the population has increased manifold. The growth and development has largely been of an unplanned nature and has taken place at considerable cost to the environment. Essentially the study reveals how not to bring about urban development in mountain areas. newline newline
