Abstract
The chlorination of benzene is an important process to produce chlorobenzene. The process produces significant amount of polychloro derivatives as byproducts such as trichlorobenzene derivatives (1,2,3-trichlorobenzene, 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene and 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene) and 1,2,3,4-tetrachlorobenzene. The 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene (TCB) is generated in large amount, which has no use in the synthesis of chemicals and is considered to be a solid waste. TCB is hazardous to human beings and the environment, and has been detected in significant amount in water, soil, sediment, plant, fish, animals and food samples. The environmental concerns have raised strong need for effective utilization of TCB for their conversion into value added products. The use of TCB as starting/ raw material for the synthesis of valuable chemicals could be the appropriate way for its utilization and to solve its serious concerns.
