Abstract
Indigofera aspalathoides commonly known as Shivanar vembu is a well-known siddha and ayurvedic medicinal plant. This plant belongs to family fabaceae and having medicinal value against various skin diseases which is having high anti-inflammatory action. In the traditional medicinal system, the leaves, flowers and tender shoot are said to be cooling and demulcent; they are used in the form of decoction for leprosy and Cancerous affections. The leaves are also applied to abscesses. To determine the anatomical features of whole plant of Indigofera aspalathoides were investigated. This plant shows midrib it possesses a small circular collateral vascular bundle. The mesophyll is differentiated in to adaxial zone of palisade cells median level of circular cells and adaxial zone of spongy parenchyma cells .The lamina possesses reticulate venation system with wide, irregularly shaped vein-islets and well defined vein terminations. Crystals are fairly abundant in the leaf mesophyll, cortical cells of the stem and phloem parenchyma of the root. The methanol extract of Indigofera aspalathoides were studied. It showed the presence of phytochemical constituents. Phytochemical constituents such as tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids/ triterpenoids, and reducing sugars. The Quantitative studies of phytochemical constituents were also performed. The analysis of antibacterial and antioxidant activity of the plant extracts of Indigofera aspalathoides Vahl ex DC was assessed. The antibacterial activity was carried out by disc diffusion method. The plant Indigofera aspalathoides strains have shown antibacterial activity against closely related Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi and E.coli. The zone of inhibition of different extracts were calculated. xix The maximum inhibition was shown against Staphylococcus aureus (65%) in methanol extract. DPPH free radical scavenging test were used for the antioxidant analysis. The DPPH assay showed the maximum inhibitory activity against methanol extracts as compared to control group. In-vitro anticancer activities of I. aspalathoides against HEP2 Laryngeal cancer cell line were also carried out and preliminary screening of bio-active compounds was isolated.
