Study and analysis of work life balance Challenges faced by professional Women in information technology Services sector

Abstract

Post liberalization, the Indian IT industry has grown phenomenally. Women are a key newlineconstituent of technology work force for the IT markets. Despite the fact that IT has provided newlinewomen with financial security, status and immense prospects, women face barriers in career newlineadvancement. The Indian IT industry employs 1.3 million women however manifests very low newlinerepresentation at leadership levels and high level of attrition. It is therefore necessary to identify newlineand address the WLB challenges in career progression of women in the industry. Work-life newlinebalance (WLB) of women working in IT is marred with significant challenges at organization, newlinefamily and socio-cultural sphere of influence. The aim of this study is to find the principal newlinefactors that effect WLB of women IT professionals and propose possible solutions and newlinesuggestions to make the government and organizational policies to enhance the work-life newlinebalance of working women. newlineA WLB questionnaire was designed based on the literature review, interaction with the subject newlinematter experts and an exploratory study (in-depth interviews) comprising of 80 women. The newlinesurvey questionnaire were sent to several HR managers in the IT organizations across India. newlineThe study population consists of IT professionals working in the organizations like Nokia, newlineInfosys, Siemens, Wipro, G.E., Deloitte etc in India. Data collected from 425 women IT newlineprofessionals was suitable for statistical analysis. Data analysis was carried out using statistical newlinetools such as SPSS, AMOS and MATLAB. newline
