Computer Assisted English Language Learning in Odisha

Abstract

This research investigated the issues related to use of CALL technology for the teaching and learning of English in selected Degree colleges of Odisha. The research was based on the hypothesis that though language labs have been added to help in developing the communicative competence of the learners, they are mostly ill equipped to implement CALL due to certain constraints. The research was conducted as a non-experimental field study using standard instruments like questionnaire, interview, and analysis of related documents. The study used a sample of 20 General Degree Colleges, 50 English teachers and 500 learners as the subjects. The study was conducted using mixed methodology to collect both quantitative and qualitative data on the variables chosen to answer the main research question posed; What are the various issues related to the use of CALL technology for teaching English to the undergraduate learners in colleges equipped with language labs? The report of the study has been presented in five chapters configured in this order; introduction, literature review, methodology, presentation of data with findings, and conclusion. The study reveals that the issues related to implementation of CALL successfully are minimal emphasis on use of technology in the English syllabus, ill-equipped and ill-maintained language labs, lack of access to computers meant for learners, inadequate language teaching software, financial constraints for engaging trained teachers, and improper maintenance of language labs. The study suggests some changes, such as redesigning of the syllabus with emphasis on more time for practice of speaking in the class and a special period for language lab for all students in groups, acquisition of appropriate software for using CALL techniques, specific training for teachers and peer learners and refurbishing the language labs with internet facility.
